Description
Great Works School Class photo dated 1948. The caption says that Grades IV + V are depicted, but that seems unlikely as the Great Works School combined grades III & IV and then grades V & VI. Most likely Grades III + IV are depicted, while the caption was a teacher and/or students prank. Since class photos were usually taken at the end of the academic year, the idea probably was to convey that the two grades were the upcoming grades IV and V. This might also explain why it is that the younger looking pupils (seated on the left) are holding a copy of the 1942 edition of Times and Places, the Grade IV-level book of the famous Dick and Jane readers by William Gray and May Hill Arbuthnot. Possibly, the book that the older pupils are holding is the Grade V-level book of the same series, but we were not able to identify that book by its cover. If indeed Grades III + IV are depicted, their teacher (shown in the back of the room) was Dorothy Priest (née Shaw) (1907-2007).
