Description
Photo of 17 students attending the Brown School (aka Lower School) in Alton--likely the sum total of students attending the school. At the time, the building had already been in bad shape for quite a while. It would finally be demolished sometime in the mid-1950s and be replaced with a newly-built elementary school in a different location. Twins Leigh (1923-1993) and Maxine (1923-2008) Corey bookend the back row, while their brother Raymond (1924-1945) stands in front of Maxine. Leigh and Maxine graduated from Old Town High School in 1940. In 1942, while living in East Wilton, both Leigh and Raymond enlisted in the US Navy. Three years later, Raymond would die of injuries sustained in the Pacific Theater. After War II was over, Leigh returned to East Wilton and built a life there. Sometime in the 1940s, Maxine would follow her second husband, F. John Henson (1924-2010), to Oklahoma and reside there for the rest of her life.
